Twenty Year Tour with Cold War Kids and Joe P!

Joe P

Joe P

You’d be surprised what three guys on stage can do to get a crowd moving.  With a bass guitar, a drummer, and Joe P himself playing the electric guitar, they took the House of Blues in Cleveland by storm. Though he opened for Cold War Kids, fans showed up just to see him perform and sang their heart out for every song.  Opening with "Color TV," playing songs old and new, and ending with "Off My Mind" gave a great mix of rocking out and enjoying the heartfelt sentiments of breakup love songs in New Jersey.  Joe P knew how to shred, especially on “Crown Vic (Black Cloud),” a song off his debut album “Emily Can’t Sing.”  After seeing him last April, it is clear that he kept up the energy and is continually grateful for getting to play for an adoring audience.

Cold War Kids

Traveling from coast to coast on their tour celebrating 20 years together, Cold War Kids rocked the House of Blues in Cleveland, Ohio on Monday night.  They played songs as new as their one released last week to deep cuts from the past. Cold War Kids packed the house and brought up the energy with killer piano solos, fantastic song transitions, and wonderful crowd interactions.  The five guys up on stage (drums, bass, keys, singer, guitarist) floored the House of Blues by fusing indie rock with blues and jazz.

As soon as I saw the piano, I know the crowd was in for a treat and, as difficult as it is to make a piano sound good on stage, frontman Nathan Willet did it flawlessly.  After they floored the house with Mexican Dogs, a song off their album Loyalty to Loyalty, Willet sat down at the piano. Him and the piano facing an entire audience showed how powerful one person tickling the ivories can be.  The last song they played before the encore was a song called “First,” which I thought was ironic and fit perfectly.

Overall, it was refreshing to see that, after 20 years, Cold War Kids still brings the energy and performs like its their first (pun intended).
