The brewery, beginning operation in 1837, has a rich history rooted in the growth and expansion of Austria. After a hundred years of being a von Kuffner family-owned business, Ottakringer was forced into being sold as a result of the families Jewish background. This was followed by a rocky period of unstable management resulting in a temporary management by the Russians until finally the von Kuffner heirs officially sold the business to the Harmer family in 1955. Since then, Ottakringer has made an effort to give back to the community, offering countless jobs and promoting sustainability through their usage of green "shoulder bottles" instead of typical glass brown bottles. Those under the legal drinking age can indulge in an assortment of non-alcoholic beverages curtsey of Coca-Cola.
