“FREE AF SKATE SHOW” PRESENTED BY TEMP TATS MAGAZINE AND HOUSE OF J

Updated: Oct 8, 2023

If you follow Houston’s underground scene, you may have heard of Temp Tats Magazine - a Houston, TX-founded magazine that proclaims its purpose being to “document Houston, Texas DIY music and culture.” On September 9, 2023, I witnessed how they

contributed to that scene with their “Free AF Skate Show” - an event that consisted of a skateboard competition, local vendors, and a punk AF musical lineup. The event was presented by Temp Tats Magazine, as well as local DIY Houston Venue, House of J. The event took place outdoors, at Houston’s EZ-7 Skate Park, and was, as the name claims, free (AF)! The concert lineup consisted of many rising alternative Houston-based artists, including Salvinorin-A, Fleishwolf, and El Jumbotron, which I had the pleasure of experiencing. The full lineup is shown on the attached promotional flier.

The first artist whose performance I experienced was “Salvinorin-A”, who performed their entire debut EP titled “Weird Question” - which consists of five songs, one of which is hilariously named “I’ll Die Before They Finish I-45.” The band's energy was immediately felt by the crowd of punks and skaters, who thrashed and kicked along to the music in unison with the lead singer. The outdoor scene looked extra dramatic as the performance strung along, the crowd’s kicking creating a mini dust storm and intensifying the raw power of the entire performance.

I’ll be honest and admit that I had never before experienced a pop-up/DIY show before this one, I had only ever attended more “standard” shows in venues with restrictions on crowd surfing and moshing. So, it should come as no surprise that I quickly learned a lesson about DIY shows - but don’t worry, it’s actually kind of funny.

The lesson came with the second performer I witnessed, “Fleishwolf.” When you see a lead singer dressed in patch-covered denim and a wrestler's mask, you should know, havoc is

about to hit. The crowd had cleared from Salvinorin-A’s performance and I saw this as an advantage to get up close to get some shots of the band, of course, there was a big open space in front of me as the crowd and I knew that the moshers were going to need their space. As soon as Fleishwolf started performing their first song, a new untitled- yet-to-be-released song, the circle pit formed. A known attendee who goes by the Instagram handle “drunklittle.gimp” seemed the star of the circle pit as they started ‘windmilling’ - spinning around with their fist out to ensure a blow, this tying back to my lesson learned, people windmill, and if you stand right at the front of the crowd, your jaw might end up getting punched, just a heads up. I don’t blame him though, Fleishwolf’s energy was just that intense. Alongside him, there were punk girls doing the merry-go-round together, other windmillers, and everyday moshers. Just like Salvinorin-A, Fleishwolf’s full setlist consisted of five songs: their unreleased track, Violent Decree, Death Valley, Unworthy Victims, and Collateral.

The last band I was able to see perform was El Jumbotron, which I overheard many attendees say was the artist whose performance they were most looking forward to. Fun fact, the guitarist and bassist of El Jumbotron are residents of the House of J, which was one

of the promoters of the event. House of J stands for House of Jumbotron / Jeffer (guitarist name) / Johnny (bassist name). El Jumbotron certainly brought the overall energy higher as the sun was coming down, the night growing closer throughout their performance. At the start of their set, I sat on the ground with a fellow photographer, capturing Johnny’s (the bassist) energy as he sang with the crowd on his side of the makeshift stage, having them right in front of his face. Johnny’s movements and playing, the intense drums, guitar, and the raspy vocals of the lead singer all blended into enthralling music that had people crowd surfing WHILE ALSO mosh pitting (throwing their fists around as they rode the waves of people), others got on top of their friend's shoulders and rocked up in the air, and of course, there was a circle pit alive throughout their full 7 song set. The first song they performed was “ Hello Ubermensch”, where they had a little hiccup as one of their guitar strings broke immediately, but thankfully one of the fellow bands came to the rescue and offered their guitar so the show could go on! The rest of their setlist was as follows, Nature's Revenge, Tsunami, Alkaline, Mold, Border Patrol, and Favorite Gun.

There were many memorable moments throughout the FREE AF Skate Show, such as the police making a traffic stop near the park and scaring all the attendees (me included) thinking the show was about to be shut down, El Jumbotron’s guitar string breaking, the dust storms, and so much more that everyone who was there will remember. I attended the show with a friend of mine, Christian Alderete, and asked him how he experienced the show as someone more used to the scene. Here’s what he had to say: “The performances were phenomenal! The bands kept the energy high regardless of the hot ass weather! The crowd always had something going on either moshing, crowd surfing, or the occasional punch in the face. But the real reason for that was how the bands played, without the bands, you really wouldn’t get that kind of reaction from many fans or anyone. To be said, I'd go again! Didn’t feel like just a concert but a community.” Which I think very perfectly sums up how most of the attendees felt. I’m excited to attend more of Temp Tats Magazine’s FREE AF shows in the coming future, and if you’re ever in Houston for one of them or any of the bands that played, I recommend you do! You won’t regret hearing what Houston’s underground scene has to offer!
