A Night Full Of Atmospheric Metal: Ultima Ratio Fest In Antwerp

On the evening of October 4th, metal enthusiasts gathered at the renowned Trix venue in Antwerp for a night of dark melodies and powerful metal performances. The stage was set for a lineup that promised to deliver an unforgettable experience, featuring four bands: Harakiri for the Sky, Omnium Gatherum, Primordial and Paradise Lost.



The first opening act, Harakiri for the Sky, set the tone with a compelling performance, showcasing their distinctive blend of post-metal and blackgaze. The band, a duo featuring J.J. (vocals) and M.S. (all instruments), weaves a haunting tapestry of sound marked by intense emotions and raw musicality. Their lyrics, often delving into themes of depression and despair, intertwine with their atmospheric compositions.



Their setlist included tracks like "I, Pallbearer", "Fire, Walk With Me", and "Calling the Rain". Their emotive performance resonated with the audience, pulling them into a melancholic, atmospheric soundscape.

Following suit, Omnium Gatherum took the stage, infusing the venue with a surge of energy. Originating from Finland, Omnium Gatherum is a force to be reckoned with in the world of melodic death metal. Formed in 1996, the band has crafted a distinct sound characterized by soaring melodies and intense energy. Members consist of Jukka Pelkonen (vocals), Markus Vanhala (guitars and vocals), Aapo Koivisto (keyboards), Mikko Kivistö (bass and vocals), Atte Pesonen (drums).



The Finnish melodic death metal band delivered a captivating performance featuring tracks like "Slasher", "New Dynamic", and "Solemn". The audience was electrified, eagerly anticipating the next act.

Primordial continued the metal journey with their raw and impassioned performance. Hailing from Dublin, Ireland, Primordial is a venerated band in the world of metal, often recognized as pioneers of Celtic metal. Formed in 1987, their music intertwines elements of black, folk, and doom metal, incorporating historical and mythological themes into their compositions. The band consist of A.A. Nemtheanga (vocals), P. MacAmlaigh (bass), C. MacUiliam (guitars), M. O'Floinn (guitars) and S. O'Laoghaire (drums).



The Irish band's setlist included "As Rome Burns", "To Hell or the Hangman", and "Empire Falls". Their emotionally charged delivery and powerful stage presence left a lasting impression on the crowd.

As the night progressed, anticipation grew for the main act, Paradise Lost, British gothic metal pioneers consisting of Nick Holmes (vocals), Greg Mackintosh (lead guitar), Aaron Aedy (rhythm guitar), Steve Edmondson (bass) and Waltteri Väyrynen (drums).



Taking the stage with an aura of anticipation, they unleashed a setlist that spanned their distinguished career. From "Enchantment" to "Ghosts", they showcased their mastery over the genre. "Faith Divides Us - Death Unites Us", "One Second", "Hallowed Land", and "Embers Fire" were among the mesmerizing tracks that filled the venue.



Holmes' hauntingly powerful voice conveyed a range of emotions, adding depth to the poetic lyrics that are a trademark of the band. The guitar work was nothing short of stellar. Aedy and Mackintosh mesmerized the audience with their intricate melodies, each note resonating through the venue. The chemistry between the musicians was noticeable, showcasing their years of collaboration.



The visuals accompanying the performance were nothing short of captivating. The carefully curated light show and moody stage design heightened the atmospheric experience.
